Insertion and Extraction Capability

SKEDD creates a reversible connection concept. That means that components or connectors connected to a PCB using a SKEDD connector can also be removed and reconnected reversibly over many insertion cycles.

It poses three challenges for this connection solution:

  • To ensure that the connector remains physically insertable the insertion forces should not be too high, so that even connectors with large numbers of pins can be inserted by hand.
  • On the other hand the insertion force must be sufficient to ensure that sufficiently low contact resistance is obtained.
  • Additionally, the contact material and contact geometry should interact in such a way that no plastic deformation of the contact occurs.

Pivots of the SKEDD contact

The SKEDD fork has two pivot points.

The first pivot is situated in the apex where the two arms join and determines the forces that occur when the connector is inserted into the PCB.

This area is designed precisely in such a way that the insertion forces remain moderate yet sufficient normal contact forces are present.

The fork of the SKEDD contact is also designed in such a way that no plastic deformation of the material occurs as a result of the insertion itself. The contact remains in an elastic state, allowing the repeated insertion and withdrawal.
