Lucas di Grassi triumphs at the Berlin EPrix

Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler supported by Würth Elektronik celebrates home race victory.

After a disappointing result from the previous round of the ABB FIA Formula E Championship in Monaco, the Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler team returns to form in their home ground of Berlin where Lucas di Grassi put on a dominant performance to clinch the number one spot on the podium.

The Tempelhof Airport street circuit provides ample overtaking opportunities and with plenty of long straights, clever strategy and efficiency are required to be successful here which is exactly what the German team displayed with the Audi e-tron FE05.

After a good result in qualifying, di Grassi was placed in the Super Pole group, placing him in third place on the starting grid. He managed to take the lead after only five laps in, “That was a very strategic race today,” said di Grassi. “It was about energy management and we showed that our car is very efficient. Winning Audi Sport Abt Schaeffler’s home round in front of such an enthusiastic crowd is simply fantastic. We’re back in the title race.” The Brazilian also managed to score the fastest race lap, gaining an additional point for the team.

Meanwhile, last year’s Berlin EPrix winner, Daniel Abt delivered a strong performance after missing out on Super Pole by only a small margin than his teammate, which led him to start in sixth position. Abt fought off his opponents to defend his way to finish in sixth place.

“Honestly speaking, I had hoped for more than sixth position,” said Abt. “But I was in the thick of the action. The battles were rough and I bent my steering column in contact with another car: a hard race, but some good points. And, needless to say, I’m happy for Lucas and the whole team for repeating our home victory. That’s simply fantastic!”

The Berlin EPrix victory makes this the 40th Formula E podium for Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler. The team currently ranks second in the team standings before the next round in Bern, Switzerland on 22nd June 2019.
