Würth Elektronik supports the Formula E break & uses time for further development of components

Sport was hit hard by the Corona pandemic - hardly any events are still taking place in these times. This also affects Formula E, in which Würth Elektronik eiSos has been involved as a partner of Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler from the very beginning. The German technology company can understand the decision to take a break in the season - and shows solidarity.

Despite all the enthusiasm that the electronics manufacturer has for Formula E, the company stands behind the decision of the suspension and behind all measures to protect the teams, helpers and fans. Würth Elektronik sees itself here as part of the racing teams and organizers who, with the suspension of Formula E, want to signal to people all over the world: Everybody has to reduce ones’ activities and contacts to the minimum necessary to slow down the course of the Corona pandemic.

"We stand behind the decision of Formula E and the FIA. Together we are strong. We would like to use the time to make the specific components even more efficient in order to drive further developments in the technology partnership with Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler," emphasizes Oliver Opitz, Vice President of the Wireless Connectivity & Sensors Division and WE Technical Coordinator Formula E.

The aim of the partnership with Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler is to develop components and optimize them so that the customer gets the greatest possible benefit from them. "We want to offer the best product with the best advice," explains Opitz. Because in addition to the components, the service and know-how of Würth Elektronik also contributes to the success of the Formula E team.

“The time for freestyle thinking and acting has come”

The technology that Würth Elektronik is improving during this period with a view to efficiency can provide a decisive competitive advantage. An important component here is the storage choke for flux converters in Formula E cars (and thus also the further development of customer-specific storage chokes for flux converters). Its basis was a standard component of Würth Elektronik, which has now been modified and adapted accordingly for top performance in motor sports.

The high-current storage choke is to be installed in the voltage supply (flux converter) of the Formula E car in the coming seasons. It is a short-term energy storage device and is comparable to the function of a capacitor or battery. This "battery" in the form of a coil is charged and discharged up to 100,000 times per second.

For tomorrows’ success, enthusiastic employees of Würth Elektronik keep on working during the "corona break". " Now it’s time to put the finishing touches on it and it is important to make good use if it to bring out those decisive ideas to give us a completive advantage when everything starts up again", explains Opitz. "We would like to thank our employees, who are still enthusiastically holding the ford and are fully committed to our customers. We are one team. We see ourselves as a partner of Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler, Formula E and as a partner of industry.
